This article describes the Resolving Conflict Creatively Program (RCCP), which teaches students behavioral alternatives to violence in the resolution of conflicts with others.
Abstract
Based in the belief that the wave of violence in American schools stems from students' being conditioned to resolve conflicts by violent means, the RCCP uses various methods to teach students how to resolve conflicts nonviolently. The RCCP, which began in 1985, teaches intergroup understanding; alternatives to violence; and creative conflict resolution among students, teachers, parents, and administrators in five school systems in the country. One component is a K-12 classroom curriculum that teaches active listening, assertiveness, expressing feelings in appropriate ways, taking perspective, cooperation, negotiation, appreciation of diversity, and countering bias. Other components are professional training and ongoing technical assistance and support for teachers, a student- led mediation program, parent training, and training for administrators. From the beginning of RCCP's implementation, teachers have reported positive changes in their students and themselves. 4 references
