Prison reform is discussed.
Abstract
This article discusses various examples of prison reform. Included as examples of such reform, occurring in a number of States, are the removal of art and music classes, elimination of therapy for sex offenders, removal of exercise equipment and televisions, the banning of weightlifting by prisoners, the scaling back of inmates' rights to sue over living conditions, and the return of chain gangs. Federal legislation such as Stop Turning Out Prisoners is noted. The policy debate concerning the pros and cons of the various types of reform is probed briefly.
