This book presents, in a condensed way, the instruments of cooperation in both legal and operational fields and highlights some elements of the future of law enforcement in Europe. Although judicial and law enforcement institutions in Europe have developed according to fundamentally different procedural systems and varying historical influences, the nations in a unified Europe are confronted with merging their diverse criminal justice systems. The author provides a history of the development of European criminal justice cooperation through international courts, treaties, law enforcement agreements, and agencies of the United Nations. Particular attention is paid to abolishing border controls and cooperative efforts to counter criminals and their activities. An appendix outlines the judicial system, prosecution function, police, and investigation approaches of 33 countries in Europe and surrounding areas. A brief biography of the author is included.
