This volume describes the concept, development, use, and impact of the Silent Witness Exhibit, a traveling memorial honoring the 26 women who were murdered in Minnesota in 1990 in acts of domestic assault.
Abstract
The goals of the exhibit also included raising public awareness of the extent of domestic violence, advocacy to help link people with local resources, and the encouragement of legislation and community action to end violence. The exhibit consists of 27 life-sized figures, each representing a women whose life ended violently at the hands of a husband, ex-husband, partner, or acquaintance. The 27th figure represents the uncounted women whose deaths were unreported or unacknowledged. The exhibit was conceived and produced by an ad hoc group of women artists and writers in collaboration with other women's organizations in Minnesota. The volume details the steps involved in creating the exhibit, raising funds, generating publicity, and bringing the exhibit to Minnesota communities and the State Capitol.
