This document presents an overview of the ADT AWARE(TM)(Abused Women's Active Response Emergency) program, which provides abused women with electronic devices that they can activate to relay emergency signals through their telephone lines to ADT dispatchers, who in turn notify the police.
Abstract
The woman must be inside her home or within 200 feet of it for the device to work. AWARE was developed by ADT Security Systems. To be eligible for the program, the woman must be in imminent danger, have a restraining order against the abuser, and be willing to prosecute the abuser and testify in court if the abuser is apprehended as a result of the use of the ADT security system. As of March 1995, the AWARE program was active in 34 markets across the United States and 14 cities in Canada. Since its inception, the program has helped save the lives of 14 women and helped improve the quality of life for many others. Program materials, photographs, and media articles
