Behavior management requires an understanding of human psychological functioning and staff interaction strategies that result in cooperative and appropriate or at least acceptable resident behavior in juvenile correctional facilities. Behavior management is discussed in two parts: (1) personal interaction strategies and behavior management techniques; and (2) programmatic strategies and techniques related to the structure and environment of juvenile detention and corrections programs. The focus is on both physical and human environments, program rules, reinforcement of good behavior, punishment of undesirable behavior, and group discussions and activities. The use of a token economy system to reward positive efforts and punish intentional negative efforts is discussed, along with the benefits of a resident level system as an additional positive reinforcement method to reward good behavior and show progress in learning appropriate behavior. 15 references
