After reviewing the magnitude of the problem, particularly that involving guns and other weapons, and the evidence showing that violence can be reduced or eliminated, this booklet outlines a strategy whereby community leaders, schools, law enforcement, business, and parents can take action. In the classroom, children can be taught to reduce anger, resolve conflict, intervene in fights, avoid the use of firearms, and change their norms about violence. Beyond the classroom domain, schools must take the lead in identifying norm setters, implementing clear and consistent guidelines, targeting specific populations within the schools, reducing drug use, establishing school safety, and training teachers. The booklet also describes how families and the community at large can participate in this effort to eliminate youth violence. A list of organizations involved in violence prevention is included.
