Adolescents participate in a 6-week educational program that focuses on the understanding of drug information and the application of concepts to their own lives. It stresses behavioral objectives aimed at acquiring self-management skills. The program modules cover the problem of psychoactive substance abuse, different psychoactive substances, the physical effects of substance use and attitudes toward use, psychoactive substance use decisions and peer pressure, substance use and driving, and substance use and dependence. Parents participate in a 5-week program that focuses on drug concepts, communication with their children about drug use and its consequences, and assertiveness training. The final chapter discusses submacro-level systems that might be altered to prevent adolescent substance use; these include school and peer environments, home and family, community movements, and business and industry.
