This instructional module on aggression and violence prevention is one of several modules in the Teenage Health Teaching Modules (THTM) Program, a comprehensive school health education curriculum for adolescents.
Abstract
The overall goal of THTM is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to act in ways that enhance their immediate and long-term and health and the health and well-being of families, schools, and communities to which they belong. The essential health skills of risk assessment, self-assessment, communication, decisionmaking, goal setting, health advocacy, and healthy self-management are highlighted in all THTM modules. Each module consists of a teacher's guide, a detailed framework for classroom activities, and handouts for student use. Some modules include additional student materials, such as factsheets and educational games. The module on aggression and violence prevention has 12 sessions, each of which is designed for a 45-minute class period. The 12 sessions focus on such areas as conflict, fighting, beliefs about conflict and violence, ways of staying calm, sizing up a potentially violent situation, and learning how to respond appropriately. Handouts for student use are included that provide additional guidance on how adolescents can think and act to prevent violence.
