The Victoria Police Force in Australia established its Police/Schools Involvement Program in 1988 after careful research and structuring and since then has provided 73 police officers as school resource officers (SROs) in both urban and rural areas.
Abstract
SROs work full-time and receive training in communication skills, lesson planning, session presentation, practical followup, drug education procedures in line with Health Department recommendations, and administration and evaluation techniques. Their involvement with schools includes classroom sessions, excursions, and general schoolyard contacts. The individual SRO chooses which schools to include and usually selects 10 schools, giving first preference to schools that have expressed interest in the program. SROs have initiated many innovations that have further enhanced the program's reputation. The program has produced several benefits that were not expected at the time of implementation. A formal evaluation is now being prepared, and plans are underway to expand this proactive program. The author is a former SRO. Photographs
