The provision of small units for long-term prisoners who pose problems of order and control in the Scottish prison system was studied using information from two units, the Barlinnie Special Unit and the Shotts 12-Cell Unit.
Abstract
The analysis focused on the program's effectiveness in holding such inmates securely, providing additional opportunities for the personal development of such inmates, returning inmates to the mainstream better able to cope and make progress towards release, and providing settings for testing alternative approaches toward inmate-staff relations. Results revealed positive achievements in each unit. Findings also suggested the need to rethink the concept of community and improve staff support and training for their individual work with inmates. An increased role for specialists should be considered as well. 21 references
