Based on more than 2,500 reports of military actions supporting drug law enforcement, this document presents observations and lessons intended to improve the quality and efficiency of counterdrug support by sharing successful techniques, tactics, and procedures and mistakes to be avoided.
Abstract
The lessons relate to eight missions: surface reconnaissance, surface surveillance, aerial reconnaissance, aerial surveillance, cargo inspection, aerial photo reconnaissance, the detection of marijuana greenhouses and drug laboratories, and support of administrative and other functions. Summaries focus on topics such as command and control, aircraft refueling, the use of a tape recorder for taking notes during reconnaissance and surveillance missions, communications equipment and security, the use of reconnaissance patrols, personnel training, the flight profile, and the use of liaison officers to communicate with law enforcement agencies.
