QueTel Corporation, an integrator of bar coding systems, packages hardware and software from various subcontractors for marketing as a turnkey package to end users. The bar codes placed on an inmate's identification device identify and track the inmate's status and whereabouts. Correctional staff can use handheld devices to scan the bar codes. Inmate tracking becomes dynamic and continuous; for example, in an unescorted facility, the officer can scan the inmate's bar code, key in the code that indicates the location of the scan and the inmate's intended destination, and set a timer based on a reasonable travel time between origin and destination. Inmate property and visitors can be controlled with the same scanners and bar code system to avoid theft and misappropriations. Scanner systems can also increase personnel safety by allowing the central system to monitor an officer's progress on security rounds and allowing the officer to input a duress signal if necessary.
