The publication compiles statistics on traffic safety, based on data from the Statewide Traffic Accident Records System maintained by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. In 1994, Missouri had a total of 180,372 traffic accidents. Economic losses associated with these accidents were estimated at $3.8 billion. About 0.5 percent of traffic accidents involved one or more persons being killed; 28.3 percent involved no persons being killed but one or more persons being injured. During 1994, 1,089 persons died in traffic crashes and 81,027 persons were injured. Speed and drinking significantly contributed to traffic accidents. Drivers under 21 years of age were involved in a large number of traffic accidents; of all fatal crashes, 27.9 percent involved a young driver. Drivers 55 years of age and older were also involved in a large number of traffic accidents; of all fatal crashes, 27.6 percent involved an elderly driver. Data on traffic accidents involving motorcycles, bicycles, school buses, and pedestrians are tabulated, as well as data on the use of seat belts by drivers and passengers. Tables and figures
