The Ninth United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders had four broad issues on the agenda: international cooperation and practical technical assistance for strengthening the rule of law; action against national and transnational economic and organized crime and the role of criminal law in the protection of the environment; criminal justice and police systems; and crime prevention strategies.
Abstract
The Congress featured six workshops discussing extradition and international cooperation, mass media and crime prevention, urban policy and crime prevention, environmental protection at the national and international levels, prevention of violent crime, and international cooperation and assistance in the management of the criminal justice system. The recommendations adopted at the Congress pertained to international instruments, elimination of violence against women, child victims, firearms regulation, and criminal justice management. This newsletter also contains articles on the fourth session of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, the meeting of the Multilateral Task Force on Democracy, Governance, and Participation, and the meeting of the Board of Directors of the International Society of Criminology.
