This article outlines a comprehensive approach to the prevention and reduction of adolescent substance abuse.
Abstract
The first section describes the extent and nature of adolescent substance use and abuse, based on current statistics. The second section discusses prevention and intervention strategies in terms of program-based primary and secondary efforts, including those that target high-risk youth, school-based and peer programs, and family intervention programs. Media and law enforcement approaches are the most popular types of community-wide prevention methods to drug prevention, but comprehensive community-based programs are showing some promise. Finally, the article discusses tertiary prevention, i.e., the treatment of adolescent substance abuse. 1 table, 1 note, and 76 references
