The programs are classified either as opportunity reduction efforts or developmental interventions. The document includes a wide variety of examples of crime prevention, including situational crime prevention programs, programs where social conditions have been modified in order to reduce the risk of crime, and crime prevention programs that target the developmental processes of individuals with the intent of modifying risk factors that may contribute to later criminality. Some programs combine elements of all these methods. This document also includes programs that target different types of crime, including counterfeiting, violent offenses, and burglary. These programs are implemented under a wide range of auspices, including law enforcement, education, welfare, employment and training, transport, telecommunications, retail sales, and grassroots community groups. Some of the innovations have crime prevention as a secondary objective. Finally, each of the programs selected for inclusion in this document has been subject to some type of objective evaluation.
