This handbook contains an overview of Iowa's domestic violence laws and the Community Response Model; helps trainees gain awareness of and sensitivity to the experiences of victims of domestic violence; examines the range and elements of abusive behavior of men who batter; and helps trainees understand the Duluth Men's Education Program Curriculum.
Abstract
The handbook gives trainees an overview of Iowa's laws regarding domestic violence, and of the Community Response model, so they understand and are able to fulfill their roles and responsibilities in holding batterers accountable. The handbook includes, inter alia: (1) Iowa's Code Provisions Relating to Domestic Abuse; (2) Summary of 1991 Legislative Changes to Iowa Law of Domestic Abuse; (3) Offense Codes and Circumstances for Batterers Program Data Collection Sheet; (4) questions about primary aggressor for law enforcement personnel; (5) Iowa Department of Corrections Standards for Batterers' Education Programs; (6) glossaries of terms and acronyms; (7) information on the relationship of sexism to other forms of oppression; (8) excuses frequently used by abusers to mask the cognizant choice to use violence; (9) introduction to the Duluth Curriculum, which assists men in stopping their abusive behavior; and (10) readings on the subject of domestic violence, including how it affects children.
