These excerpts from an unidentified publication discuss two street gangs: the Crips and Bloods, developed street gangs based in Los Angeles, that are rapidly becoming organized crime factions with a nationwide network, and the Miami Boys, a growing street gang profiting in narcotics trafficking and a model for developing smaller street gangs. Drug trafficking activities and violence associated with these activities are discussed. Characteristic profiles of members of each gang are provided, including identifying graffiti, colors, and organizational structures. This excerpt warns that these gangs are becoming more sophisticated in terms of criminal enterprises and network expansion. Efforts to stop the major finance vehicle for gangs--narcotics trafficking--needs to be stopped to impact the activities of these gangs. To this end, community agencies, schools, parents, as well as others must work together to provide more lifestyle alternatives for gang- prone youth. A second excerpt discusses the Gang Related Active Trafficker Suppression (GRATS) program, launched in Los Angeles in January 1988, to target black street gangs involved in drug manufacturing, distribution and street sales, as well as other gang prevention and intervention programs in operation in Los Angeles.
