In 1993, the number of serious offenses reported to the police totaled 4,300, 12.9 percent higher than in 1992. Property offenses accounted for 70.8 percent of serious offenses, followed in frequency by offenses related to forgery, coining, and personation (13.4 percent) and malicious injury to property (6.7 percent). The median age of adult offenders convicted of serious offenses was 27.9 years for males and 31.5 years for females. Women represented only 6.7 percent of all adult offenders. Foreigners accounted for 22.1 percent of total convictions for serious offenses. Juveniles involved in the commission of both serious and minor offenses decreased from 220 in 1992 to 154 in 1993. Juvenile delinquency continued to be primarily reflected in property offenses. Persons appearing before courts who were charged with an offense increased between 1992 and 1993. Of 109,894 offenders appearing before courts in 1993, 91,842 were males and 18,052 were females. The most commonly used sentence imposed by courts involved fines which were used in 97.8 percent of convictions.
