The Cyprus Ministry of Justice believes that the drug abuse problem in the country is at a low level compared to the rest of Europe. This low level is attributed to strong family ties and the existing social organization in Cyprus. The country is relatively convenient as a drug trafficking transit point, however, because of its geographic location, regular air and naval connections with many countries, advanced telecommunications system, and popularity as a holiday resort. The Cyprus Police Department's Drug Law Enforcement Unit cooperates with Interpol in the arrest and prosecution of international drug traffickers. The Cyprus government has established national policies to deal with drug trafficking, implemented measures to prevent and combat drug abuse and drug trafficking, and enacted the Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Cyprus government also focuses on confiscating drug trafficking proceeds and on treating drug users.
