The future of police-media relations is examined to provide strategic alternatives for improvement, and a model strategic plan is presented to assist in the development of skills and abilities that may be required of law enforcement in the year 2005.
Abstract
Using the Long Beach, California, Police Department as the basis for analysis, the study focuses on social changes that may affect police-media relations, the impact of emerging technology on police-media relations, and measures that can be implemented by law enforcement managers to mitigate negative public perceptions. The nominal group technique is employed to identify trends and events that may affect future police-media relations and the development of a media relations strategy and management structure. Details on the futures study methodology and scenario development, strategic planning, and the transition management plan are provided. Appendixes contain the questionnaire used in the study and a list of trends and events. References, tables, and figures
