This report summarizes survey results from a sample of 900 adults in Queensland, Australia, regarding their attitudes toward crime, the police, and the Criminal Justice Commission, and compares them to responses to two previous surveys conducted in 1991 and 1993.
Abstract
Overall, the image of the Queensland Police Service (QPS) reported by respondents in 1995 was favorable, and showed improvement in public attitudes toward the police since 1991 and 1993. While respondents were generally supportive of the police, the police were still perceived as being fairly isolated from the community. Seventy-six percent of respondents rated their overall level of satisfaction with the service provided by police in their local community as good. The survey also covered respondents' experience with the police complaints process and their perception of the Criminal Justice Commission's role in investigating citizen complaints. 3 tables, 4 figures, 4 references, and 2 appendixes
