The first section contains articles examining and evaluating policies and practices related to intensive supervision programs, which have been touted as a possible solution to prison overcrowding and to the need for provide tough probation supervision for more serious and chronic offenders. The chapters in the second section deal with issues related to special offender populations, namely drug-involved probationers, spouse abusers, and juvenile offenders. A growing trend in community-based corrections is to combine a sense of punishment with increased control over probationers. The chapters in the final section describe the responses of a probation department to an increasing problem with absconders, the effectiveness of a vocational network in providing training and employment to offenders in the community, and the experiences of probation officers working through an innovative community-based program for nonviolent juvenile offenders who are placed in foster homes and then reintegrated into their original homes.
