The first section of the book examines the broader context in which the England and Welsh criminal justice system operates, by describing English society and culture and comparing it to that of the U.S., the English systems of government and criminal law, and the current crime situation in England. The second section focuses on law enforcement in England; some of the topics covered include the current organization of the English police, the role of women and minorities in policing, and public attitudes toward the police. The authors compare American and English policing, and examine the judicial and correctional systems of England. Separate chapters explore the court process, the use of plea bargaining, case resolution, and sentencing. The final section presents an overall assessment of the two criminal justice systems, with particular emphasis on policies and practices that might be applicable to both. Chapter references
