Some 109,400 offenses against prison discipline were punished in 1994, a 9 percent increase over 1993. These amounted to 225 offenses per 100 of the average inmate population in 1994, a rate similar to the 226 recorded in 1993. The most common offenses were disobedience/disrespect and unauthorized transactions such as drug possession. Together these accounted for 64 percent of all offenses in 1994. Violent offenses accounted for about 12 percent of the offenses, the same as in 1992 and 1993. Inmates charged or convicted or burglary or robbery committed a disproportionate number of disciplinary infractions. The most common punishments were additional days of confinement and stoppage or reduction of earning.
