This report on the legal information needs of immigrant women who are victims of spouse abuse was commission by the Department of Justice Canada as part of its Public Legal Education and Information (PLEI) program.
Abstract
The report is based on a literature review of materials on wife assault and on interviews with service providers, Federal and provincial government agencies, and PLEI practitioners. The report overviews the Department's public legal education and information mandate and then describes the situation facing many immigrant women who are victims or survivors of spouse assault. The second section outlines the component of a proposed pamphlet, to be translated into the languages of the predominant ethnocultural communities in Canada, which would help immigrant abused women seek appropriate legal remedies. The final section contains an annotated review of public legal education and information materials and other literature on wife assault.
