Crime data covering the April 1994 to March 1995 period reflected statistically significant downward trends in fraud, property theft, and theft from motor vehicles in New South Wales (NSW); no major trends up or down in murder, sexual assault, robbery with a weapon, and breaking and entering; and statistically significant upward trends in assault, robbery without a weapon, and personal theft.
Abstract
The recorded assault rate was strongly influenced by the exercise of police discretion and public willingness to report assaults to the police. About 0.7 percent of the NSW population of women aged 18 years and older were sexual assault victims during the 12-month period. Breaking and entering was one of the most frequently occurring serious offenses. Stealing from retail stores and dwellings also occurred frequently. Detailed data are tabulated on monthly trends in recorded criminal incidents and on crime in NSW regions for selected offenses. Appendixes contain maps and additional information on offense classifications and local government areas in statistical divisions. 15 notes, 32 tables, and 12 figures
