This report presents statistics on searches, road checks, resulting arrests, and other actions in England and Wales in 1994 under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984.
Abstract
During 1994, the police recorded 576,000 stops and searches under the law and other legislation, a 30 percent increase over 1993. A total of 70,300 arrests resulted from stops and searches in 1994, an increase of 26 percent over 1993. Other actions included 3,000 road checks, a decrease of 16 percent from 1993, and the detention of 465 persons for more than 24 hours and subsequent release without charge, a 1 percent increase over 1993. Two hundred forty- six warrants of further detention were granted to extend beyond 36 hours. In 70 percent of these cases, the person was subsequently charged.
