Directed to parents of sexually abused children, this booklet explains the emotions parents commonly feel and the constructive actions they should take to deal with both their feelings and their children's needs.
Abstract
The text notes that the discovery that a child has been sexually assaulted can arouse emotions of powerlessness, shock, guilt, shame, denial, anger, and fear. These feelings are normal and need to be expressed in a setting offering nurturing and support. Child sexual abuse can affect victims in many ways, physically, emotionally, behaviorally, and academically. Parents have a crucial role in their children's healing process. However, they should not pressure their children to talk. They should also understand how to handle their child with sensitivity, discipline the child appropriately, inform other caretakers as appropriate, and address the child's probable need for therapy.
