This report provides statistics on the number of drug addicts notified to the Great Britain Home Office in accordance with national regulations, and presents summary statistics on drug- related deaths.
Abstract
In 1994, the number of drug addicts notified to the Home Office increased by 21 percent from 1993 figures, a somewhat higher rate of increase compared with recent years. There was also a further increase in notifications of addiction to methadone which was reported in over 45 percent of the cases at hand; notifications of addiction to cocaine increased, but accounted for less than 10 percent of reports. In general the highest number of addicts resided in England and northwest England. More new addicts were notified by hospitals and treatment centers than by general practitioners, continuing a trend seen since 1991. Fifty-four percent of addicts injected drugs, a slight decrease since the previous year. In 1993, 570 previously notified drug addicts died, an increase of 7 percent over the 1992 figure. Drugs caused or contributed to just over half of addict deaths. 8 tables, 14 figures, and 21 appendix tables
