Abstract
Among the issues discussed in the evolution of national drug control strategy are institutional responses to the need for interdiction and eradication, how the interim strategy differs from the past strategy, progress in implementing the national drug control strategy, and interim strategy highlights. An overview of the Federal counterdrug community summarizes the antidrug efforts of various Federal agencies, followed by a section on regional counterdrug organizations. A separate section focuses on the U.S. Defense Department's roles, missions, and capabilities in countering drug smuggling. This is followed by a section that discusses the role of governors and State agencies in counterdrug operations. The State agencies discussed represent California, Maine, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. A section also addresses National Guard roles, missions, and capabilities in counterdrug efforts. Remaining sections address the management and integration of counterdrug intelligence, as well as processes and procedures for requesting military support, obtaining drug intelligence, and the threat of clandestine drug laboratories.
