The article presents some statistics on drug abuse patterns in the U.S., and discusses the availability, distribution, use, and abuse of heroin, cocaine, and marijuana in the U.S., Europe, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. The U.S. government's approach to the drug problem consists of three components: domestic drug law enforcement, domestic treatment and prevention efforts, and international activities. The U.S. works with other countries and international organizations to finance narcotics control cooperation, and to eradicate drug crops at their source while encouraging the substitution of other crops.
