Abstract
The author analyzes the methodology of comparative criminology, based on accepted definitions, and examines the significance of social control theory to the study of crime trends. The article discusses developments in criminology in Latin America, stresses the importance of comparative criminology in the context of European unification, and illustrates the use of comparative methods in studying crime in Japan and Germany. 50 notes
