A unique feature of the book is the incorporation of traditional police procedures in rape investigation with new and contemporary techniques developed during the past decade, such as criminal investigative analysis as well as current classification of rape and sexual assault. The first section of the book includes three chapters that provide a basis for examining some of people's thoughts and reactions to the problem of rape. The second section of the book focuses on the investigation of rape and deals primarily with the investigative aspects of the crime. Two updated chapters discuss the collection and observation of physical and trace evidence of the victim, the offender, and the scene of the crime. Chapters also discuss the presentation of this evidence in court. The third section addresses the medical and nursing aspects of rape investigations. An updated chapter orients the rape investigator to the conduct of a medical examination and the manner in which evidence should be collected. The rationale as well as the intricacies of the medical examination are discussed. A new chapter discusses prototypes for victim care services and provides a data collection instrument for rape and sexual assault. Section IV considers the prosecution of rape cases, and Section V discusses special offender populations, specifically, child molesters, the serial rapist, and the criminal sexual sadist.
