Overall, the discussions call for collaboration among scientists from various disciplines in which joint projects are proposed and implemented. Recommendations urge systematic research along the entire development life span, incorporating the best scientific thinking from areas such as developmental psychology, sociology, communications science, and economics. Areas identified for research are developmental trajectories of young children through adolescence to young adulthood, critical developmental transition periods as they relate to the emergence of multiple problem behaviors, parent-child relationships across the life span, transformative cognitive processes, moral and ethical development related to the emergence of drug-use patterns, the social ecology of drug abuse, and community change and social network analysis. Twenty-two recommendations for prevention research are listed.
