This booklet summarizes the main proposals contained in the British government's White Paper seeking to improve the Prison Service's performance in the areas of custody, care, and justice.
Abstract
These proposals are based on specific recommendations made in the areas of closer cooperation with other criminal justice agencies, the role of the Prison Service in keeping the prisoner in custody while preparing him or her for release and reintegration, security and incident management, structure of the Prison Service, and the Prison Service's staff. Management of the prison population is discussed in terms of remand prisoners, vulnerable and sex offenders, and disruptive prisoners. Other topics for reform include standards in prisons, programs for inmates, and complaints and discipline.
