Scenes From a Shelter: Talking About Domestic Violence

NCJ Number

Annotation
Intended for use by children's advocates, teachers, counselors, and other professionals who work with young children from homes in which domestic assault occurs, these materials discuss domestic violence honestly and directly and offer reinforcement activities.
Abstract
The materials tell children that ambivalent feelings about other people and situations are normal, that they are not alone, that they are not to blame for the violence, and they can talk about how they feel no matter how confused or strange the feelings may seem. Children are also reminded that nobody expects the children to make it better and that adults can begin to help fix what is broken. The puppets in the videotape voice children's feelings and fears. The workbook and discussion guide presents statistics on domestic assault; describes the emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and cognitive effects; provides guidelines for using the video; and suggests activities ranging from making collages to developing a safety plan. A selected bibliography lists children's programs, coloring books, parenting materials, children's activity books, and games
