The analysis focused on the extent to which nonprison sanctions are imposed on convicted felons, the factors that influence the imposition of these sanctions, and whether data needed to conduct research on nonprison sanctions is collected. Results revealed that the majority of these offenders received nonprison sanctions. Factors influencing the extent to which these sanctions were used included the availability and accessibility to such programs, statutory requirements, judicial philosophy, and recommendations made by officers of the court to judges. In addition, sentencing guidelines scoresheets were not completed by the courts for many of the 948 felons. Such scoresheets should be prepared for every defendant because they are the main source of information used by the Sentencing Guidelines Commission to study Sentencing Guidelines and alternatives to imprisonment.
