Intended for both beginning and experienced prevention practitioners, this volume presents current drug prevention information and an overview of the issues, principles, and approaches that are most effective in preventing the abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs and the resources useful for such efforts.
Abstract
The text emphasizes that prevention requires collective action by concerned community members and that planning is an essential part of any successful program. Topics are presented alphabetically. They include acronyms, AIDS, alternatives approach, binge drinking, birth defects, blood alcohol concentration, children of alcoholics, cocaine, community action groups, community partnerships, continuum of service, drug testing in the workplace, employee assistance programs, and environmental approaches to prevention. Additional topics include evaluation, impaired driving, labeling youth, media advocacy, mutual self-help groups, parents and prevention, people with disabilities, prevention strategies, resilience and protective factors, social bonding, social marketing, and youth participation.
