Abstract
Intended for use by college students, the textbook contains five parts. The first part acquaints students with crime as a social problem, crime measurement, and the conceptualization of crime under law. The second part covers the history and organization of the police, police functions, the rule of law in law enforcement, and police officers and their lifestyles. The third part deals with the origin and role of courts, lawyers and judges, prosecution and adjudication, and sentencing. The fifth part examines the field of corrections, including institutional corrections and community-based alternatives to institutionalization. In discussing complementary justice systems, the final part of the textbook looks at juvenile justice, justice for crime victims, and international and comparative criminal justice. An appendix contains the U.S. Constitution. Notes, tables, figures, illustrations, and photographs
