England's Police and Criminal Evidence Act of 1984 establishes precise limits on the inconvenience to which suspects may be subjected during the process of a criminal investigation.
Abstract
The act is designed to minimize tensions between the police and the public, especially in inner city areas, and to strike a balance between protecting suspects against the abuse of police powers and the need to prevent crime and punish the guilty. The act requires more police recordkeeping than in the past and more police accountability. It also governs every transaction between the police and the suspect throughout the custody period.
