Research has ranged from purely theoretical studies to applied, empirical, historical, longitudinal, and followup research to comparative and cross-cultural studies. The research covers diverse areas of crime and criminal justice. Ongoing research projects are focusing on bullies and their victims in elementary schools in Slovenia, the institutional treatment of abused and neglected children, culture-related violence, the correctional standards used in Slovenia, and criminal justice policy issues. Nearly all of the institute's researchers also teach criminology at one of the social science faculties with this subject in their curriculum. To disseminate information, the institute organizes conferences, training seminars, and other forms of organized training or teaching. The institute has also operated a library and documentation service since its founding. Future work will focus on the analysis of social problems such as drug abuse and new forms of crime as well as policy measures to address changed conditions.
