This article describes the Attitudes Toward Correctional Treatment Scale, using data compiled for 1,433 male inmates assessed at a Canadian prison over the past 3 years.
Abstract
The typical offender included in the sample was male, 30 years old, had a 10th grade education, and had been incarcerated several previous times, usually on property and drug-related charges. The first half of this study examined the relationship between scale scores and assessment outcome; inmates were divided into three outcome groups, including those for whom no treatment was recommended, those for whom treatment was recommended but declined, and those for whom treatment was recommended and completed. Results indicated that higher scale scores were associated with a better assessment outcome. A quasi-random sample of 476 offenders who participated either in an addiction program or anger management program was used to evaluate the impact of the scale on treatment outcome. Results indicated that the scale is a reliable and valid predictor of offender treatment outcome. 3 figures, 1 table, and 10 notes
