This article responds to a commentary by R. P. Dobash and R. E. Dobash (1995) on her original article discussing power versus feminist theories of wife abuse.
Abstract
This author argues that, while the interpersonal model of power does not deny the importance of sexual inequality in the study of wife abuse, it focuses too exclusively on the domestic imbalance of power between male and female partners, and fails to consider the patriarchal system which dominates society as a whole. In addition, this author believe that issues other than patriarchy -- for example, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status -- are essential for the understanding of wife abuse and other types of family violence. 1 figure, 5 notes, and 21 references
