This article describes the emerging field of transnational criminology and outlines the contours of a research agenda.
Abstract
Similar to traditional criminology, transnational criminology can be divided into two subareas, including transnational criminality (causes, characteristics, social and geographic distributions, and effects) and transnational, or even global, institutions of crime control that are being constructed. The international regime being built to deal with transnational crime represents a postmodern crossing of borders, and an assertion of particular universal values. The research community can help ensure that this process of creating new structures of cooperative criminal justice will be a democratic one. 65 notes
