The data are based on the most serious offense charged in each case. The number of delinquency cases received by the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services Intake during 1990-91 was 29 percent greater than the number received in 1982- 83, down 17 percent from the peak year of 1988-89. The number of serious offenses was somewhat less than during 1982-83, and the number of misdemeanor cases was up by 53 percent. The number of felony drug cases (excluding marijuana) was up by 8 percent, although the figure for 1990-91 was down by over 54 percent from the peak year 1987-88. Auto theft cases peaked in 1990-91, 57 percent above 1982-83 levels. The number of robbery cases decreased by 19 percent; aggravated assault cases increased by 22 percent, but were down by 26 percent from the 1986-87 peak. Misdemeanor assault cases increased by 30 percent. The number of intake delinquency cases received increased by 28 percent for white males, 78 percent for black males, 115 percent for black females, and 24 percent for white females.
