This guide has been designed to help adolescents and those involved in their care to understand and assess the harmful effects of using alcohol/drugs, and to take appropriate action.
Abstract
The guide is to be read and completed by juvenile alcohol/drug users with the assistance of and consultation with either helping professionals, parents, or teachers. Each section of the guide focuses on some aspect of the juvenile's feelings, behavior, relationships, and life goals. In addition to a focus on specific feelings and behaviors that may be affected by feelings and behaviors, the guide considers how alcohol/drugs may affect school and work, friendships, family interactions, self- concept, growing up, recreation, spirituality, defenses, and wellness. In each of these areas, the juvenile participant is informed about how alcohol/drugs may impact this aspect of his/her life; the juvenile is then guided with questions and written exercises in assessing how alcohol/drug use has affected the juvenile in the area at issue. The concluding section guides the user in the development of an action plan that involves setting goals and addressing factors likely to hinder the achievement of these goals.
