This hearing involves testimony that pertains to the nature and extent of drug trafficking in Georgia and how State and Federal law enforcement officials can cooperate to address it.
Abstract
Testimony documents the presence of significant amounts of drugs coming both from without and within the State. Testimony shows that traffickers are increasing their efforts to import such dangerous drugs as methaqualone or "Quaaludes," cocaine, and heroin into Georgia. There is also evidence of a significant growth of the domestic production of marijuana within Georgia. Testimony shows further that drug money threatens the continued integrity of the criminal justice system. Drug-related public corruption cases have been exposed in recent months. The head of the south Florida drug task force testifies on the task force concept and his own experience in putting that concept into operation in south Florida. A similar task force is planned for a five-State region that includes Georgia; it will be based in Atlanta. The U.S. attorney for the northern district of Georgia, who will be involved in establishing the task force, testifies about how this will be done and its likely effects on State and local enforcement agencies. Various law enforcement officers testify about their experience in drug enforcement and offer suggestions. Appended prepared statements and an exhibit
