This 1994 Annual Report of the Boston Police Department (Massachusetts) presents 1994 highlights, information and statistics on the work of departmental offices and bureaus, and personnel information.
Abstract
Because this is the 140th anniversary edition of the annual report, it includes a brief narrative and pictorial history of the department. In presenting selected 1994 highlights, the report profiles The Summer of Opportunity Program, which was established to engage at-risk youth in a range of summer activities beneficial to their social, academic, and professional aspirations. Another highlight was the work of the Youth Violence Strike Force, a multijurisdictional team that focuses on the apprehension of violent offenders, as well as firearm and other serious outstanding warrant cases within participating agencies. A third highlight was the Comprehensive Communities Program, which prescribes that selected jurisdictions engage in a comprehensive planning and strategy development process to control and prevent crime and violence. Other initiatives were designed to counter the illegal gun market. Other sections of this report address neighborhood policing initiatives and the use of technology to provide better service. Following a profile of the departmental organizational structure, information and data are provided on the work of the Office of the Police Commissioner, the Office of Internal Investigations, the Bureau of Field Services, the Bureau of Investigative Services, and the Bureau of Administrative Services. Other sections focus on award recipients, retirees, officers who died in the line of duty, obituaries, and a departmental directory.
